Upper Eyelid Surgery

Upper eyelid surgery is often used to remove excess skin and tissue from the upper eyelid. The excess skin may cause you to blink excessively and even get in the way of your vision.

This surgery can be performed in the office using anesthesia and involves making a small incision to remove excess skin and tissue. Those in good physical health are good candidates for this surgery. You will need someone to come with you and drive you home after the surgery. There should be someone there the first night you are home.

Lower Eyelid Surgery

Lower eyelid surgery often corrects excess skin under the lower eyelashes. The skin may be sagging, puffy, have dark circles or wrinkles making you look older. An incision may be made in the inner part of the lower lid. This is used when it appears that you have bags under the eyes.

A more aggressive procedure is used when there is sagging skin or muscles. This is only used in patients with good skin and muscle tone. This gives the doctor access to the skin, muscle and fat under the eyelid. These cuts heal quickly and are hardly noticeable later on. This procedure can be done in the office. You will need someone to drive you home and stay with you the first night.

Surgery and Aftercare

The surgery will take about two hours. During the procedure, incisions are made within the natural creases of the eyelids where they can be easily concealed.

After surgery, you will be watched for two hours in the recovery room. Vision is checked by the doctor to ensure no complications arise. After this period, you can go home and rest.

You will have to elevate your head and apply ice packs to keep the swelling down. It is recommended that you do not sleep on their eyelids. They should be prepared to take a few weeks off to recover from the surgery. During the first 24 hours, you will have bruising and possibly oozing. It should reside in about 48 hours.

You will come back to see your surgeon one to two days after your surgery. Your incision will be cleaned and antibiotic ointment will be put on the incision. The doctor may prescribe an ointment for the incision to apply and eye drops to help with swelling. More stitches may be added to control the swelling.
