Deep Plane Facelift

Many people feel younger than they appear, especially as signs of aging set in and gradually worsen over time. Dr. Christopher Cote and Dr. Nicolette Picerno are double board-certified plastic surgeons and otolaryngologists who understand the intricacies of the face and how it ages. With advanced techniques like the deep plane facelift, patients can expect natural-looking results that restore a more youthful, refreshed appearance.

What is a Deep Plane Facelift?

A deep plane facelift is an advanced facelift technique that addresses significant wrinkling, skin sagging, and jowling in the mid-face and lower face. During the procedure, facial tissues in the deepest layer of the face, below the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS), will be repositioned and tightened to rejuvenate a more youthful appearance. Ligaments that attach the deep tissues to the SMAS layer will be released and elevated to effectively lift the mid-face, pulling back the deep muscle structure and the overlying layer of facial tissues for a sculpted appearance. Fat pads in the face might also be resculpted and lifted vertically to address hollowed cheeks or jowls (sagging skin along the neck and jawline).

The deep plane facelift procedure can be done under general anesthesia or IV sedation, depending on your comfort level. Incisions will be made around the ears where the scars can be easily concealed. After the procedure, the face and neck will be wrapped with bandages and a compression garment.

Who is a Candidate for a Deep Plane Facelift?

The best candidates for a deep plane facelift in Denver are healthy adults who are nonsmokers with no underlying medical conditions. During the consultation at our Denver plastic surgery office, our board-certified plastic surgeons will ask about your medical history and treatment goals to develop a customized procedure.

Facelift surgery can be paired with other rejuvenating procedures such as blepharoplasty or a forehead lift. Younger patients who are bothered by early signs of aging may be recommended for less invasive facelift procedures such as a lower facelift, mid-facelift, or mini-lift.

How is the Deep Plane Facelift Different from a Normal Facelift?

A “normal” facelift addresses the superficial muscle layer and overlying skin. Although this proves to be an effective method for early or moderate signs of aging, more advanced aging requires lifting techniques and resculpting in the deep layers that structure the face. By targeting the deeper tissues and muscles of the face, rather than only tightening the skin, patients can expect natural-looking results and will avoid a “windswept” result.
