The lips are one of the most important facial features, with many cosmetic practices focusing on the lips to create an improved, youthful appearance. The lips start to show visible signs of aging much faster than other parts of the face. For example, our lips start to show wrinkles and lines, making them appear aged. Have you looked at your lips recently? Do they always seem to be turned downwards or have fallen from their plump condition? If so, these concerns can be improved with a surgical Lip Lift.

What is a Lip Lift?

A lip lift is an in-office facial plastic surgery procedure and a lip enhancement procedure designed to improve the appearance of the lips and facial aesthetics by reducing the space between the nose and upper lip and elevating a thin or downturned mouth. This surgical procedure is designed to provide structural and aesthetic improvements, giving you amazing results.

Lips can start to look permanently downturned or even fall away from the nose with excess skin due to loss of volume in the skin. By getting a lip lift procedure, which involves lifting the upper lip through an incision placed in the natural crease beneath the nose, you can have fuller-looking, elevated lips. A lip lift is an innovative procedure designed to improve the overall appearance of your mouth and rejuvenate lips that have been affected by the aging process.

For most people, the goal of a cosmetic procedure is to create a natural and youthful look. Lip lift procedures are an excellent way to improve the lips and create a natural appearance, with long-lasting results and satisfying aesthetic results that enhance patient confidence.

A lip lift can alter the appearance of the lips by:

  • Adding the appearance of volume to the upper lip.
  • Exposing the hidden upper teeth.
  • Reversing a downturned lip corner (corner lip lift).
  • Eliminating lines caused by natural aging.
  • Exposing more of the pigmented lip tissue and enhancing the vermilion border for a fuller, more defined look.
  • A central lip lift can also enhance the shape and definition of the Cupid’s bow, contributing to a more youthful and attractive lip contour.

A lip lift is commonly known for its ability to plump thin lips, but it can also be used to improve signs of aging and a downturned mouth. Many patients experience a noticeable improvement in the appearance of their lips and overall facial aesthetics after a lip lift. Patient satisfaction is high due to the natural-looking results achieved with this procedure, which enhance the overall look of your lower face.

For some patients, combining a lip lift procedure with lip fillers can also help lead to further lip enhancement. To learn more about combining procedures, please feel free to ask during your consultation appointment.

Dr. Picerno and Dr. Cote are experts in the field of facial cosmetic surgery. We want you to be able to smile confidently. With this minimally invasive procedure, since it is relatively straightforward, there is very minimal scarring and downtime. The incision is typically hidden within the natural crease under the nose, minimizing visible scarring. The two doctors have over 45 years of combined experience, so you can trust that your surgeons at FacesFirst will provide you with natural-looking, lasting results.

Choosing the Lip Lift Treatment

Dr. Picerno and Dr. Cote can determine if a lip lift would benefit you during a consultation appointment. During your consultation, they will discuss your aesthetic goals to ensure the procedure aligns with your desired facial aesthetics. To create a treatment plan, they will look at the 3-Ds of your face. The 3-Ds help them address the different changes in the face to create the most balanced look. Following the recommended treatment plan helps achieve optimal results. These 3-Ds are:

  • Dermal: Skin changes that occur due to loss of collagen and elastin, as well as sun damage or movement.
  • Deflation: Lost volume that occurs in the face, causing the lips to lose definition.
  • Descent: These are changes in the skin that cause the skin to sag. This is most relative to the Lip Lift since many lips start to become longer over time, causing the top lip to gradually move further away from the bottom of the nose.

Type of Lip Lift Techniques

There are various surgical techniques that can be employed to achieve a lip lift. The surgical technique that is right for you may vary depending on factors such as your individual anatomy and desired results. These options may include:

  • Bullhorn lip lift (subnasal lip lift or indirect lip lift): This is the most common and popular lip lifting technique. A single incision is created in the shape of a bullhorn below the nose, in the perioral area. The center and sides of the upper lip are then brought upwards by removing a strip of tissue beneath the nose, which enhances the vermilion and can also help lift the corners of the mouth. The bullhorn lip lift may be combined with other procedures, such as corner lifts or tissue resection, for additional contouring effects.
  • Central Lip Lift: An incision is created at the base of the nose to lift the center of the upper lip, also called the Cupid’s bow.
  • Corner Lip Lift: This technique focuses on elevating the corners of the mouth. It is often performed for individuals with downturned or drooping lips.
  • Gullwing Lip Lift (direct lip lift): An incision is created along the border of the upper lip (similar to the shape of a flying seagull). This helps to create a more defined top lip.
  • Italian Lip Lift: This technique provides a more subtle lift than a bullhorn lift but does not lift the center of the lip. It involves the creation of two incisions at each nostril.
  • V to Y Lip Lift: An incision is created in the shape of the letter “V” and closed with an incision in the shape of the letter “Y.”

Some lip lifting techniques involve incisions in the perioral area to achieve the desired lip shape. In addition, certain techniques can subtly affect the lower lip, improving overall lip balance and facial harmony. Lip lift procedures can also be combined with other procedures, such as facelifts, neck lifts, brow lifts, or rhinoplasty, for comprehensive facial enhancement.

Lip Lift Recovery

Lip lift surgery is usually performed under local anesthesia in the office and only takes about an hour to complete, though general anesthesia may be used in some cases, especially if combined with other procedures. Ideal candidates for a lip lift are those who are dissatisfied with the appearance of their upper lip and are seeking improvement. It is important to inform your surgeon about any blood-thinning medication you are taking, as these may need to be stopped prior to surgery.

The recovery time for a lip lift is fairly quick, with most patients able to return to normal activities within a week. Swelling is common after surgery and typically subsides within a week. While the incision is healing, you are free to apply makeup to the area to cover it. Visible scarring is minimal and usually well-concealed, but proper care is important to minimize its appearance. Full results are visible once the area is fully healed.

Your doctor will provide you with specific instructions tailored to your needs to ensure that the healing process goes as smoothly as possible. Follow-up appointments are important to monitor healing and ensure optimal recovery. Undercorrection is a rare complication where the desired enhancement is not fully achieved and may require further adjustment.

Frequently Asked Questions About Lip Lifts

How does a lip lift work?

There is a small incision on your lip that allows a portion of the skin to be removed and the lip lifted. This treats an elongated saggy lip that occurs as we get older. It also increases the amount of lip show and creates a more natural look than an over done filler. When the incision is closed carefully and there is good healing it creates a nice natural look.

How long does lip lift take to heal?

There is a small incision on your lip that takes time to heal like any wound on the face. If it is meticulously closed and your healing process goes well it may be a little pink for a few weeks and imperceptible within a month or two. Certainly how your body heals a scar may affect the results and that will have to be assessed at a consultation.

What is the most attractive lip shape?

An attractive lip shape will include natural full red Vermillion of the upper and lower lip with the lower lip being slightly larger in volume. In addition, the Vermilion border between the red part of lip in the skin is well defined with a nice natural cupids bow in the philtrum of the midline upper lip. The skin around the lip should also look healthy, smooth and plump. There should be some show to the teeth, revealing a nice smile. A lip lift can help create this natural lift with a beautiful dental smile. The lip lift also increases the amount of red vermilion show of the upper lip without adding unnecessary volume with the filler.

Does lip lift make lips bigger?

Since a little lift pulls the upper skin up it creates more show of the red part of the lip and this is usually natural and more desirable look to the lip.

Does a lip lift Change your nose?

A lip lift should not change your nose. However, since the length of the lip is shortened, then the natural proportions of the lip relative to the nearby nose will change and usually in a more acceptable way with nice natural results.

Do lip lifts look natural?

A well executed lip lift can create a very natural look and rejuvenate the lips. More often people make the mistake of injecting too much filler in an upper lip and it looks unnatural. This is because the lengthened and saggy lip was not addressed and when I lift lift is done it can create a nice natural lift and can be complemented by the appropriate amount of filler.

Is a lip lift painful?

A lip lift can be done comfortably in the office with local anesthetic. This can be gently administered and complemented with other gentle anesthetic agents that your surgeon feels are safe and reasonable to use.

Does a lip lift limit the movement of my mouth?

A lip lift will not limit the movement of your mouth. You will still be able to speak, drink from a straw, and use facial expressions like you normally do.

Does a lip lift change my smile?

A lip lift establishes a more youthful appearance to the mouth area. This can include changing your smile slightly. In most cases a lip lift causes more of your upper tooth to show when you smile.

How many times can you get a lip lift?

A lip lift is a permanent procedure meaning most people will only need to have it done once in their lives. In some cases, a touch-up procedure may be necessary as you continue to age.

Are there different types of lip lifts?

There are several different types of lip lift procedures. These can include a subnasal, central, corner, direct, Italian, or V to Y lip lift. The chosen style of lip lift will depend on your current condition and your cosmetic goals.

Does a lip lift affect the bottom lip?

An upper lip lift will not affect the bottom lip. some people will choose a lower lip filler to balance the effects of the lip lift to the upper lip.

What treatments can I combine with a lip lift?

A lip lift can be combined with other treatments to enhance overall results. Many patients pair a lip lift with lip fillers, Botox, and laser and skin resurfacing treatments to improve their results further.

How long is recovery after a lip lift?

Typically, patients can expect initial swelling and healing to take a few weeks, while full results may develop over time. Your surgeon will provide specific aftercare instructions during your consultation.

How Long Does It Take to See Results of a Lip Lift?

While some improvement may be noticeable immediately after surgery, final results develop as swelling subsides. This process typically takes 1-2 weeks, with continued refinement as the healing progresses.

Can a Lip Lift Improve Aging Lips?

Yes! A lip lift is an excellent option for individuals experiencing elongation of the upper lip due to aging. It shortens the distance between the nose and upper lip, restoring a youthful, defined lip shape and improving overall facial harmony.

What Should I Avoid After Lip Lift Surgery?

After a lip lift, patients are typically advised to avoid excessive mouth movements such as vigorous chewing, direct sun exposure to the area, smoking or drinking through straws, and intense physical activity that may increase swelling. For personalized aftercare instructions, it’s best to follow the guidance of your facial plastic surgeon.

Will there be a visible scar?

All lip lifts involve a small incision, but the most common technique, the subnasal bullhorn, places the scar along the natural crease under the nostrils, where it is easily concealed. With proper healing and optional scar treatments, such as COu2082 laser, most patients find that the scar becomes barely noticeable over time.

Can I combine a lip lift with other procedures?

Yes, many patients choose to combine a lip lift with other facial procedures, such as a facelift or fat transfer, for more comprehensive results. Combining treatments can address multiple signs of aging at once and create a balanced, natural outcome.

Will a lip lift change my smile?

A lip lift enhances the smile by revealing more of the upper teeth, which is often associated with a youthful and attractive appearance. It does not negatively affect the ability to smile but instead improves overall lip balance.

How long before I can wear lipstick or makeup on the area?

Most patients can safely begin applying lipstick or makeup about two weeks after surgery, once the incision has healed and sutures have been removed. Your surgeon will provide specific aftercare instructions to ensure optimal healing before resuming cosmetics.

Can a lip lift correct lip asymmetry?

Yes, a lip lift can improve mild lip asymmetry by reshaping and repositioning the upper lip. During your consultation, your surgeon will carefully assess your lip proportions and customize the technique to enhance symmetry and balance.

Does a lip lift affect the appearance or function of the nose?

A lip lift does not change the function of the nose, and the incision is carefully hidden under the nostrils. While it may subtly enhance the balance between the nose and upper lip, it does not alter the shape of the nose itself.

Can I get a lip lift if I've previously had lip fillers?

Yes, patients who have had fillers in the past can still be good candidates for a lip lift. The procedure works differently from fillers by adjusting the structure of the upper lip, so it can complement or even replace the need for future filler treatments.

Is a lip lift suitable for all skin types?

A lip lift can be performed on patients with all skin types. In fact, it can even help improve the appearance of aged or sun-damaged skin by removing a small portion of skin at the base of the nose.

How do I find the right doctor to perform a lip lift in Denver?

The best way to find the right doctor is to look for a board-certified facial plastic surgeon with experience in performing lip lifts. At a practice like FacesFirst Cosmetic Surgery, our surgeons specialize in facial aesthetics and can tailor the procedure to your unique needs.

What is the ideal age or candidate for a lip lift?

There is no set ideal age since a lip lift can benefit younger patients who want more lip definition as well as older patients who have lost lip balance with age. Good candidates are generally healthy individuals looking to enhance lip shape, improve tooth show, and restore harmony to their facial proportions.
