Otoplasty Isn’t Just for Kids: Why More Adults Are Choosing to Correct Their Ears

When most people think of otoplasty, or ear correction surgery, they often imagine children undergoing the procedure to correct protruding ears. While it is true that many young patients benefit from this surgery, more adults are now seeking adult otoplasty to address prominent ears they have lived with for years. At FacesFirst Cosmetic Surgery in Denver and Lone Tree, we are seeing a growing number of adults who want to enhance their appearance and boost their self-confidence through ear reshaping.

What is Otoplasty?

Otoplasty, or ear pinning, is a surgical procedure designed to reshape the outer ear. Its primary goal is to correct ears that protrude more than is typical or to improve overall ear symmetry. The surgery can create a more balanced and natural appearance by setting the ears closer to the head. While children are often candidates for this procedure, adults with fully developed ears can achieve excellent results as well.

Why Adults Choose Otoplasty

Adults seek otoplasty for several reasons. The most common motivation is that their ears protrude or “stick out” in a way that draws attention during social interactions. This can affect self-esteem and confidence, and correcting it can have a meaningful psychological benefit. While plastic surgery does not solve all self-esteem issues, many adults report feeling more confident once their ears are less noticeable.

Over the past few years, awareness of ear correction surgery has grown, partly due to social media and increased access to information. Many adults are now considering the procedure because they may have lived with prominent ears since childhood and now have the resources and opportunity to address them.

What to Expect During the Otoplasty Procedure

Otoplasty is generally performed as an outpatient procedure lasting about an hour and a half to two hours. Depending on the patient’s age, preferences, or medical considerations, it can be done under local or general anesthesia.

During the surgery, small incisions are made behind the ear to access the cartilage. The cartilage is then reshaped using customized sutures, allowing the ears to sit closer to the head. The surgical approach is largely similar between adults and children, though children under 12 often require general anesthesia due to their age and comfort level.

Recovery and Results

After surgery, patients can expect their ears and head to be wrapped in a dressing for two to four days. Some mild discomfort is common and can be managed with oral pain medications. Once the dressing is removed, patients typically wear a gentle headband and follow basic wound care instructions for a few weeks. Most adults return to normal, low-impact activities within a few days, while high-impact activities may be limited for several weeks.

Results from otoplasty are usually visible immediately after the dressing is removed. Swelling and bruising are normal and will fade over time. Most patients enjoy a lifetime of results if healing proceeds smoothly. While minor asymmetries or small irregularities may persist, a skilled surgeon such as Dr. Cote can discuss realistic expectations with each patient.

Risks and Considerations

It is important to understand that not all adults are ideal candidates for otoplasty. Patients with certain ear deformities, such as microtia, or those with health conditions that affect healing, may need alternative approaches. It is also important to have reasonable expectations about what the procedure can achieve. A thorough consultation with a board-certified facial plastic surgeon helps determine candidacy.
