What is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty, more commonly called eyelid surgery, is a cosmetic procedure to improve the appearance of the upper and/or lower eyelids. Blepharoplasty Techniques 

There are two main types of blepharoplasty surgery, including upper blepharoplasty and lower blepharoplasty. These two procedures can also be combined to rejuvenate both the upper and lower lids. 

Upper Blepharoplasty

Upper eyelid surgery focuses on correcting sagging or drooping upper eyelids. It specifically addresses drooping or hooded eyelids caused by genetics or aging to achieve a more youthful or alert appearance. During this procedure, an incision is created along the natural crease of the upper lid, through which excess tissue is removed. This results in a more defined eyelid contour and improved peripheral vision in cases where vision was obscured. 

Lower Blepharoplasty

This procedure can be performed a few different ways. One approach is to perform an incision inside the eyelid to remove unwanted, visible fat. Another approach involves making an incision through the skin which allows skin and muscle to be tightened and fat to be repositioned which depends on the patient’s anatomy and results in a smoother, more refreshed lower eyelid area.

Eyelid surgery may be beneficial for many, though it is not right for everyone. Individuals with drooping or sagging upper eyelids who are concerned with a tired appearance or those with undereye bags or puffiness may find this procedure to be effective in meeting their aesthetic goals.

What to Expect Following Blepharoplasty 

Recovery following eyelid rejuvenation is fairly easy. While mild swelling and bruising may occur, the use of cold compresses can help to minimize these effects. Patients should avoid strenuous activities, such as bending over and lifting heavy weights, for the first week following surgery. However, light walking is encouraged to promote circulation. Most patients can return to work within a week. 

Healing will continue for up to 3-6 months, and scars will continue to fade with time, bending into the natural eyelid creases. Results are long-lasting, with patients able to enjoy eyelids that appear more youthful and refreshed.
