Otoplasty Recovery: What to Expect Week by Week

Otoplasty, also known as ear correction surgery or ear pinning surgery, is a procedure designed to reshape or reposition the ears, often performed to correct prominent ears or other cosmetic concerns. While the surgery itself is relatively straightforward, the recovery process is crucial in achieving optimal results. Understanding what to expect week by week regarding otoplasty recovery can help ease any concerns and ensure a smooth healing journey.

Week 1: Immediate Post-Surgery Recovery

The first week after otoplasty is when most of the initial healing takes place. Patients typically return home the same day as the procedure, often with bandages wrapped around the head and ears to protect the ears and maintain their new shape. During the first 48 hours, patients may experience some mild discomfort, swelling, and bruising. Your plastic surgeon can prescribe pain medication to help manage any soreness if needed, and it’s important to rest and avoid unnecessary movement.

By the middle of the first week, some patients experience mild itching or pressure around the ears, but touching or adjusting the bandages should be avoided. Sleeping with the head elevated helps reduce swelling, and it’s best to avoid sleeping on the sides to prevent any pressure on the ears.

After 2-4 days, bandages may be removed, and many people often feel well enough to return to desk work and run simple errands. At the end of the first week, your surgeon will schedule a follow-up visit to check on the healing process and possibly remove any non-dissolvable stitches.

Week 2: Adjusting to Healing

By the second week, most discomfort will have subsided, and swelling and bruising will begin to diminish. Many patients often feel more comfortable but should still take precautions. At this stage, a lighter headband is usually recommended to keep the ears in place as they continue to heal.

Many people feel ready to return to all types of work or school after a few weeks as well, though it’s still necessary to avoid any strenuous activities or anything that could put stress on the ears. Mild sensitivity or numbness in the ears may persist, which is completely normal and usually temporary.

Weeks 3-4: Returning to Normal Physical Activities

By the third and fourth weeks, most of the visible swelling and bruising have significantly improved, and patients start to feel more like themselves. The ears continue to settle into their new position, and while there may still be some mild residual swelling, it is usually not noticeable to others.

At this point, patients can resume moderate physical activities, such as light exercise, but should still avoid contact sports or activities that could risk trauma to the ears. The headband may still be needed at night to prevent accidental folding or pressure on the ears while sleeping. Some individuals experience tingling or minor sensitivity changes, but these sensations typically fade over time.

Weeks 5-6: Near Full Recovery

Around the five- to six-week mark, patients see a more refined version of their final results. Most of the swelling has resolved, and the ears appear more natural in shape and position. Any lingering sensitivity or numbness continues to improve.

By this stage, most patients can return to all normal activities, including rigorous exercise. However, contact sports or any activity that could result in a blow to the ears should still be approached with caution. It’s also important to continue following any aftercare instructions provided by your surgeon, including proper scar care, to ensure the best outcome.

Long-Term Recovery

Over the next several months, the ears will continue to refine, and any remaining swelling will fully resolve. By the three-month mark, the final results are typically apparent, though subtle improvements may still occur over time. Scar healing is also an essential part of long-term recovery. While otoplasty incisions are usually well-hidden behind the ears, protecting the skin from sun exposure can help scars fade more effectively.

By six months, most patients feel fully recovered, and the ears should look and feel completely natural. If any concerns arise, such as prolonged swelling, severe pain, or unexpected changes, consulting your surgeon is always recommended.

Healing Tips

As with any surgical procedure, it is important to eat a healthy diet to help your body heal quickly. Your body needs essential nutrients like protein, vitamins, and minerals to repair tissues, rebuild collagen, and support overall healing after surgery.

Staying hydrated is also essential for overall health and can help reduce swelling, a common side effect after surgery. For more healing tips, check out our AOO | ENT Specialists of the Rockies blog titled “8 Simple Otoplasty Recovery Tips”.
